Monday 18th January

Welcome to Week 3!


Phonics – Learn to Read ‘u’ or ‘z/zz’
We are going to begin our week with a lesson focused on reading! In this lesson, we are all moving onto our next sound. You do not need to watch both videos, so please refer to the Tapestry Phonics Memo to see which new sound your child should be focusing on this week.

Learn to Read ‘u’:

2) ‘u’ CVC words– Practise segmenting and blending some of these words. Can you use them in a sentence?

2) ‘z’ and ‘zz’ Phoneme Spotter – read the story and highlight every word you find with the sound ‘z’ or ‘zz’.

Literacy – The Gingerbread Man – Answering Questions
This week we are moving onto looking at the story ‘The Gingerbread Man’!
Listen to the story and discuss the questions below with a grown up.


– Why do you think the Gingerbread Man wanted to run away?
– What happens after the Gingerbread Man leaves the bakery?
– Who ends up chasing the Gingerbread Man?
– How do you think the Gingerbread Man is feeling when he sings his song?
– What mistake did the Gingerbread Man make near the end of the story?
– What is your favourite part of this story? Why?

This week we are focusing on celebrations in Church as well as looking at what can be found in a church for a different game of ‘I Spy’.

First, look at Celebrations in Church  to look at what we typically celebrate in Church. Then, follow the video for a game of I Spy (you will need to pause to take time to spot the different items) and a prayer.

Optional Additional Activities:
– See if you can play the spotting game yourselves with St Alban and Stephen Church I Spy
– You could also have a go at making a Stained Glass Window. Or decorate  The Our Father Prayer

Maths –  Creating Patterns Using Objects
This week we are continuing our work on ‘Pattern Recognition’! We are going to be creating lots of different types of patterns and understanding how each individual sequence works.

Watch the video which explains the rules behind creating patterns and have a go at continuing the patterns that I am making!

Activity: Have a go at creating your own repeating pattern using different objects. Can you explain what your rule is?

Phonics – Learn to Write ‘u’ or ‘z/zz’
Following on from the new sound we learnt on Monday, todays lesson will be focusing on segmenting words for spelling! In this lesson, it would be great if you could grab a pen and join along with me! You do not need to watch both videos, so please refer to the Tapestry Phonics Memo to see which sound your child should be focusing on this week.

Learn to Write ‘u’:

1) ‘‘u’ CVC cut or write – you can cut the letters out and place them in the correct spaces to form a word that matches the picture. You could challenge yourself by writing the word!

Learn to Write ‘z/zz’:

1) ‘zz’ Find and Write – Try and write a word for each picture on Page 1.
2) ‘z’ and ‘zz’ Worksheet

Literacy – The Gingerbread Man – Creating Thought Bubbles
Today we are going to be choosing different moments in the story and considering what a particular character might be thinking. You can draw a picture of the character and a thought bubble above their head. Your grown up can then help you to scribe down your ideas!

Maths – Pattern Recognition – Let’s Get Creative!

Today we are going to be creating our own patterns using pens or paint! Watch the video of me experimenting with different ways to get creative with patterns!

Thursday 21st January

Phonics – Learn to Read ‘r’ or ‘qu’
In this lesson, we are learning another new sound! This is a reading lesson, so make sure your robot arms are warmed up and join in where possible! You do not need to watch both videos, so please refer to the Tapestry Phonics Memo to see which sound your child should be focusing on this week.

Use the attachment ‘Obb and Bob’ to make your own alien friends, and sort some real and fake words. Alternatively, play the game ‘Picnic on Pluto’ at https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/2/picnic-on-pluto.

Watch the video exploring our understanding of patterns. Can you work out what is missing in each of my patterns? I also need your help to check I haven’t made any mistakes!!

Activity: Complete the pattern worksheets attached. OR parents, can you create a pattern and see if your child can work out what is missing or wrong with your sequence?
