In Year 3 we studied the Ugandan Saint, Charles Lwanga. We learnt how he refused to give up his Catholic Faith, even when threatened with death by the king of his country. We wrote prayers for Charles Lwanga and created stain glass pictures of him to remember his brave sacrifice as a Christian martyr.
Saint Charles Lwanga was born on 1st January 1860. He lived in the Kingdom of Buganda, (now part of Uganda) which was ruled by King Mwanga II. Charles was a young page in the court of the King. The King wanted Charles and his companions to deny their Catholic Faith but Charles refused to. For this reason, he was martyred on June 3, 1886, at age 26. He is the patron saint of African youth and Catholic action.
