Pupil Voice

Intent

In Art and Design, pupils are supported to take risks, show determination, and reflect on and improve their work. Our curriculum is carefully structured to meet national expectations, enriched with exciting activities, and introduces children to a diverse range of artists, architects, and designers, helping to build their cultural awareness and creative confidence.

Implementation

At St Alban & St Stephen Catholic Primary School, every pupil has their own sketchbook to record ideas, practise techniques and refine their artistic skills. Sketchbooks encourage reflection and critique, enabling pupils to develop their work thoughtfully and show perseverance in completing projects to a high standard.

Children explore a wide range of media, experimenting as sculptors, painters, illustrators and print-makers. They study artists from different eras, cultures and countries to develop a broad understanding of artistic concepts and techniques. Visits and visiting artists further enrich and inspire their learning.

Our Art and Design curriculum is fully aligned with the National Curriculum and is designed to ensure all pupils develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding outlined within it.

Impact

As a result of our Art and Design curriculum, pupils at St Alban & St Stephen leave school able to think, speak and create like artists. They confidently discuss artists, techniques and processes, and demonstrate progression in their skills across a range of media. Through regular reflection in sketchbooks and opportunities to evaluate their own and others’ work, pupils develop resilience, creativity and pride in their achievements. The quality of work displayed around the school, alongside pupil voice, reflects their growing confidence, knowledge and enjoyment of art.
