Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)
Intent
At St Alban & St Stephen Catholic Primary School, we have chosen to teach French as our Modern Foreign Language. Our French curriculum inspires pupils to embrace languages and cultures beyond their own, fostering respect, curiosity and global awareness. In a world where differences can divide, learning a language helps children recognise both diversity and shared humanity. Through French, pupils develop confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing, while gaining an appreciation of the culture and traditions of French-speaking countries. Our curriculum nurtures the whole child, building resilience, independence and a willingness to communicate, laying strong foundations for future language learning and life in a diverse world.
Implementation
From the summer term of Year 2 onwards through Key Stage 2, French is taught by our specialist French teacher in carefully sequenced fortnightly lessons that build on prior knowledge and develop pronunciation, vocabulary and grammatical understanding progressively. Pupils practise speaking with accurate intonation, read and write with increasing fluency, and explore cultural understanding alongside language learning. Teaching is supported through modelling, visual resources, interactive activities and working walls to reinforce key vocabulary. Ongoing assessment, including end-of-unit reviews, ensures that learning is retained and informs future planning.
Our MFL curriculum is fully aligned with the National Curriculum and is designed to ensure all pupils develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding outlined within it.

Impact
Pupils leave St Alban & St Stephen to move onto secondary school with the confidence to speak in French, a secure foundation in key vocabulary and grammar, and a growing awareness of other cultures. They demonstrate enthusiasm for languages, respect for diversity and the ability to communicate with increasing independence. Equipped with the skills to think beyond their own experiences, they are well prepared for further language study and for life in a global community.
