Smartphone Free School

Childhood is much too short to be spent on a smartphone! At St Alban and St Stephen, we believe that children learn, play, and grow best without smartphones. Unlike other technology and devices, smartphones put the internet directly in a child’s pocket, giving constant access to social media, messaging, and content that can be distracting or inappropriate.
Being smartphone-free helps children to focus, enjoy face-to-face conversation and relationships, and develop creativity and problem-solving skills. It also protects their wellbeing by encouraging active play, curiosity, and a healthy balance between screen time and real-world experiences.
In line with other St Albans schools, we recommend that primary school pupils are not given a smartphone and do not have access to any kind of social media. Children are not allowed to bring smartphones to school. Year 5 and 6 pupils who have permission to walk to and from school alone can bring an old-fashioned 'brick phone' with the agreement of their parents and the school.
We also ask all adults not to use their phones on school premises or grounds.
