šæ Green Day 2025šæ
Today, our school was filled with energy, enthusiasm, and a strong sense of purpose as we celebrated our annual Green Day. This yearās event took on extra significance as we mark the Jubilee Year of Hope. In his encyclical Laudato siā, the late Pope Francis reminded us of our shared responsibility to care for the EarthāGodās creation. As stewards of the planet, we dedicated this day to reflecting on how we can live more sustainably and protect the world around us.
Throughout the day, each House took part in a carousel of eco-friendly activities designed to inspire sustainable thinking and nurture a deeper connection with the natural world. Some of the highlights included:
š² Smoothie Bikes ā Children discovered the health benefits of fruit smoothies before working together to pedal a special smoothie bike, blending their ingredients into a well-earned treat!
š Leaf Rubbing ā A calming, creative activity that encouraged children to observe the details of leaves and appreciate the beauty of the natural world.
š Pond Dipping ā An exciting chance to explore our school pond, where children discovered several water snails and even a few newts!
š§ Nature Relaxation ā Children enjoyed peaceful moments on mats outdoors, listening to the sounds of nature and practising mindfulness in the fresh air.
The day ended with the whole school gathering on the Lower Site to share highlights, sing our special Green Day song, and celebrate the wonderful sense of community that made the day so special.
A huge thank you goes to all the children, staff, and families who helped make Green Day 2025 such a successāespecially those who supported at home by providing eco-friendly packed lunches, walking or cycling to school, and donating materials for our activities.
We hope the day has inspired our pupils to continue being changemakers: at school, at home, and in the wider world. šš
Letās keep the momentum going as we journey together towards a more sustainable futureāone step at a time!

Anti-idling survey
This morning and afternoon, members of the Eco Warriors and school community conducted a vehicle idling survey. The only idling vehicles we spotted were cars, and we pleasantly surprised to count just 9 idling cars in the morning, and only 5 in the afternoon.
Regardless of the low number, we will be doing work to promote our anti-idling goals and share important facts and statistics about the negative health consequences of idling in vehicles. We hope that when we conduct this survey again in the future, we see an even smaller number of idling cars!

Year 3 plant bulbs with our Environmental Tutor Miss Sophia
Year 3 were fortunate to conclude their week by planting bulbs with our Environmental tutor, Miss Sophia. The children first shared their knowledge of the importance of trees, and then discussed the different seasons and which were best for planting bulbs and when we might see them flower.
Year 3 then planted a row of daffodils in front of the fruit tree orchard on the Upper Site, on the strip of grass by the entrance gate. It took a bit of effort to dig a hole twice the height of their bulbs, but showing our Core Value of Determination, they eventually succeeded (avoiding a few worms in the process!).
We look forward to seeing the yellow and white colours erupt at the end of Winter/early Spring!

Sustainability Assembly: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
On Wednesday, all of KS2 were fortunate to have a sustainability assembly on recycling. The children learned some interesting facts about waste including how long glass bottles take to break down in a landfill (a million years!) and where the rubbish we use ends up (landfills or recycling plants).
Our visitor, Miss Koziara, shared facts with us, including the shocking truth that about 76% of what currently goes in the bin could actually be recycled!
We also discussed the importance of the 3Rs, and how they are listed in order of importance, as trying to reduce the waste that we produce is far better than simply recycling materials, as this takes a lot of energy which isn’t always good for the planet.
The children were asked to consider getting more involved with recycling at their homes which we hope parents will happily support.
Year 3 afterwards, took part in a recycling workshop and learnt which materials go in which bin.
Hopefully, the children all feel inspired to reduce the packaging they use and recycle correctly.

World Car Free Day
World Car Free Day was officially marked on Sunday 22nd September, but we at SAS are celebrating it on Monday 23rd September. Some of our Eco Warriors have spoken in assembly about the event, and the children know that the class or classes with the lowest number of children who came by car to school will win an extra 10 minutes of play time.
The Eco Warriors will be tallying up the totals and announcing the winner or winners on Friday!
Good luck, and thank you for supporting us in caring for God’s planet.

Welcome to the new Eco-Warriors for 2024-25!
Last Friday, Miss Sophia and I had the pleasure of meeting most of the new Eco-Warriors. We were fortunate to be able to hold our meeting outside where we discussed why the children wanted the role, and decided upon the roles the children would undertake for the year.
We have many exciting events coming up and I look forward to working more closely with the Eco-Warriors!
