Upon our return from half-term, Year 6 began their work on some exciting new topics, starting with History and The Empire of Benin. This week, we discussed the concept of Empire: what they are, how they are formed and why they are formed. The children wrote as definition using examples of empires they were familiar with, ranging from ancient Romans to the more recent British to fictitious examples from films such as Star Wars.

Linked to our History topic, we began working on our animal masks D&T project. We spoke about animals that were sacred tot he people of Benin and the children made annotated sketches of key animals in order to choose the features they will include in their creations.
Elsewhere this week:
- We began our new RE topic of Prophecy and Promise. The children created a timeline of key promise God made with the people of the Old Testament. We spoke about people saying ‘Yes’ to God’s plans for them.
- In Maths, we are continuing to work on Fractions, with a focus this week on identifying common factors and common multiples in order to find equivalent fractions.
- In Science, we will be beginning our new topic of Electricity, building on the work carried out in Year 4. The children will be working with circuits and learning how to correctly draw and identify the scientific symbols for the different components.
