Science Week
As part of Science Week, on Tuesday we had the pleasure of welcoming Mr. Offer, a geologist, who shared fascinating insights into his work. He explained that rocks can tell stories if you know how to read them—some even served as stepping stones for dinosaurs! We explored the rock life cycle and learned how different types of rocks are formed. One of the most exciting activities was testing the buoyancy of various rocks. We discovered that, unlike most rocks, pumice floats because it is full of tiny air pockets and bubbles. We thoroughly enjoyed learning about the important work of geologists and the incredible places this profession can take you.
On Wednesday we visited the Science Dome, where we explored the fascinating world of the Ancient Egyptians and their understanding of the stars. We discovered how they used the night sky for navigation, timekeeping, and religious beliefs, comparing their interpretations with those of other ancient civilizations. As we gazed at the projections of the constellations, we imagined how different cultures ‘joined the dots’ of the stars to create mythical figures and stories. The immersive experience made us feel as though we were standing beneath an ancient sky, seeing the stars as the Egyptians once did. It was a truly unforgettable experience that sparked our curiosity about astronomy and history!
On Thursday, we had the privilege of welcoming another parent visitor, Dr Snowden, who spoke to us about her role as a paediatrician and the fascinating process of brain growth and development. She explained how the brain changes as we grow, helping us to understand the importance of looking after both our physical and mental health. The children were especially excited to use stethoscopes to listen to their heartbeat, as well as those of their classmates. Dr Snowden also gave us the opportunity to ask questions about different parts of the brain, deepening our understanding of how they function. It was a really interesting session that gave us a glimpse into the world of medicine and the vital work of doctors in keeping people healthy.
Miss Sophia
On Friday, we were incredibly fortunate to have and afternoon with Miss Sophia. She guided us through the process of planting strawberry and carrot seeds, explaining how each type of plant grows and what it needs to thrive. In addition to the seeds, we also had the exciting opportunity to plant potatoes, which we learned require plenty of space to develop properly. We enjoyed getting our hands dirty while learning about the importance of patience, care, and responsibility in nurturing plants. It was a wonderful experience that not only taught us valuable gardening skills but also deepened our appreciation for where our food comes from.
