This week, our school has been buzzing with excitement as we celebrated Black History Week! We began with an energetic drumming and dance workshop led by Zamble African Dance, who brought traditional West African culture to life through rhythm and movement. The children loved experiencing these authentic African arts.
Across the school, each year group explored a different aspect of Black history. Reception and Nursery celebrated their own heritage by discovering where their families come from. Year 1 learned about football legend Laurie Cunningham, and Year 2 explored the incredible artwork of Stephen Wiltshire. Year 3 studied the poetry and activism of Benjamin Zephaniah, while Year 4 travelled back to Roman Britain to learn about Emperor Septimius Severus. Year 5 researched John Blanke, the Tudor trumpeter, and Year 6 wrote biographies of key Black British figures.
We ended the week with a wonderful celebration assembly, where everyone shared their learning and discovered a special local story about Mrs Ferrin’s grandfather, who travelled from Jamaica to St Albans in 1941 to work as a skilled engineer at De Havilland.
It was an inspiring week of learning, celebration, and pride!
