When painting and sculpture had become physically challenging for Henri Matisse in his later years due to illness, he turned to a new type of medium and began creating cut paper collages, or decoupage. Some of his most famous works in this medium have been ‘The Horse, the Rider and the Clown’ (1947) and ‘The Fall of Icarus’ (1947). We used these as well as his other collage designs to create our own collages in this style. First, we designed them in our art books, next we painted three pieces of paper following the colours of our designs, finally we cut out the paper to create our designs. The results were very good and the children enjoyed “painting with scissors”.
