Two of the highlights of the week have been science and sewing. In science we recreated the digestive system with a cardboard pipe for the oesophagus, a plastic zip lock bag for the stomach and tights for the intestines. We pretended our fingers were our teeth and we used a paper cup to represent the large intestine. Into this ‘digestive system’ we stuffed a mixture of cream crackers, which we pretended were chewed up by our ‘teeth’ (our fingers), together with a ripe banana. Water was added to represent saliva and fruit juice to represent the digestive juices of the stomach. The resultant mixture wasn’t very nice, especially when the food reached the small intestines (tights) and the children had to squeeze the mixture just like our intestines squeeze out nutrients and liquid from our food. It was quite an experience!
To finish the week the children practised their sewing skills and made bookmarks using various stitches such as running stitch.
