On Monday 2nd June, the first day back after half term, Year 4 visited St. Albans Cathedral. Luckily, it was a sunny and warm day, and it was a pleasant walk along the Alban Way and through the city centre to reach the Cathedral. St. Albans Abbey has been the focus of our local history topic and we have been learning about its role throughout history. During the visit we learnt about its early history as a sacred place for pilgrims to visit the relics of the martyred St. Alban. Later, it became an abbey where monks worshipped and worked. After the dissolution of the monasteries, it became a parish Church and finally today it’s a Cathedral. It has become a place where people come not only to worship but also to learn about the past. The children certainly learnt a lot about the past and really enjoyed their visit. The took part in many interesting and interactive activities such as dressing as monks or abbots, creating illuminated lettering and taking part in role play based on the first attempts of Henry VIII’s officials to close down the monastery. At the end of the day, we walked back to school somewhat tired but having had a great experience.
