Year 2 Science: Exploring Habitats and Microhabitats 🐞🌿
This week in Year 2, we have been busy exploring habitats and microhabitats in our science lessons. The children have been learning all about what animals need to survive, including food, water, air, and shelter.
To help us understand the importance of shelter, the children went on an exciting minibeast hunt in the EYFS playground. Armed with curious eyes and lots of enthusiasm, they searched carefully under logs, stones, and leaves to see what they could find. We discovered a variety of insects such as ants, woodlice, spiders, worms, beetles, and ladybirds.
The children loved learning about the different environments these minibeasts live in and why they choose certain places to make their homes. We talked about how dark, damp, and safe spaces can be perfect microhabitats for small creatures.
During the lesson, the children were introduced to lots of new scientific vocabulary, including habitat, microhabitat, shelter, survive, environment, and minibeast. It was wonderful to hear them using these new words confidently as they shared their discoveries with one another.
After all their hard work, the children were treated to a short time of free play in the EYFS playground. This was a lovely opportunity for them to remember what it was like to be in the Early Years, with some even enjoying playing alongside their younger siblings.
It was a fun, hands-on lesson that brought science to life and left the children smiling, curious, and eager to learn more!
