This week in Year 6, we have been learning about pie charts and line graphs. We started the week by creating a class-sized chart in the playground, considering how to work out the size of each segment and the angle that would be required. We spoke about common percentage-to-angle conversions such as 25% = 90° and 10% = 36°. When we returned to class, we solved some problems involving pie charts.
Later in the week, we explored line graphs and had to create stories to match what we saw on the graph, considering whether the values we increasing or decreasing and how long changes on the graph lasted for. We also discussed the difference between discrete and continuous data.

On Wednesday afternoon, we began our new Design and Technology unit focused on food. We discussed how different foods had different tastes and that some of these tastes are complimentary. The children tried combinations of cheddar, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickled onions and grapes.
Elsewhere this week:
- In English, we continued exploring Spiderwick’s field guide. We have written new articles about sea serpent sightings off the coast of Portsmouth, described sprites to work on our sentence structures and learned how to use hyphens to improve our descriptions of the fire salamander.
- In RE, we read about Jesus washing his disciples feet during the Last Supper and what message he was trying to express to his apostles. We explored some artwork and discussed whether the artist and St John focused on the same things.
- In History, we learned about evacuation during the Second World War and some of the issues evacuees would face during this period.
